Every so often a material lands on my bench that I feel I have to hold with both hands. 🌿
Look right to the bottom of these earrings — those little iridescent drops are maireener shells, also called rainbow kelp shells, and they come from one place on earth: the cold, clear waters of Tasmania.
For centuries, Tasmanian Aboriginal women have gathered, cleaned and strung these shells into necklaces, mothers teaching daughters, generation after generation. Shell necklace-making is the oldest continuing cultural practice in Tasmania — one of the few that has continued without interruption since before colonisation.
That green-gold-and-violet flash isn't polish or dye. It's the shell's own hidden shimmer, the little gem inside, revealed the way it always has been.
This is the first time I've ever worked with maireener shells in an ASC piece, and I set them the only way that felt right — beneath Australian boulder opal, held in twisting silver.

Opals are very delicate compared to other gemstones. Please take care with any opal jewellery so it does not become scratched or damaged. They can scratch easily as they have similar hardness to glass. To clean use mild detergent in warm water and a soft toothbrush or cloth. Avoid bleach, chemical cleaners and ultrasonic cleaning machines.
